What it does
This bill would direct the Secretary of Energy to establish an "extremophile whole genome sequencing initiative" within 90 days of enactment. The initiative would collect, catalogue, and sequence the genomes and metabolites of organisms found in extreme environments — including at least one deep mine housing an underground science facility — and store that data in a publicly accessible database. The bill would also require a plan for a new long-term physical sample storage facility, restrict sample collection to a 5-year window, and authorize appropriations of "such sums as are necessary" to fund the program.
