What it does
This bill would amend federal transit law (49 U.S.C. § 5329) to require that any new fixed-route bus 30 feet or longer, with a useful life of at least 10 years, purchased with federal funds include a floor-to-ceiling barrier around the operator's workstation. The barrier must be capable of fully enclosing the driver's area and blocking entry of persons, fluids, and objects, while not obstructing the driver's sightlines. The requirement would take effect two years after enactment and would not apply to buses purchased with rural transit funds (Section 5311). Transit agencies could waive the requirement if the labor union representing the plurality of frontline workers agrees in writing to do so.
